I am drawn to the decadent innocence of Carravaggio’s Bacchus upon which this image is based. It’s internal tension between innocence and dissolution is a repeating theme in my work. It also reflects my conflicting feelings about the art world and the shifting sands of aesthetics and message. The “Greenman” bas reliefs on the corners are common images from architecture of certain periods, representing the relationship of man and nature. For me they contrast with the Bacchus and his vineyard headdress.
