From Austine’s Greek Mythology series. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, herself fell in love with the god Adonis. The story goes that one day when Adonis was hunting, he was gored by a wild boar. His blood mingled with Aphrodite’s tears and created the anemone or windflower, which is tall and slim like the beautiful youth Adonis, and like him, blooms only for a very brief time. Aphrodite holds a scallop shell and a dove, two symbols most associated with her.
